Back when I was compiling the histories from the schools in the "old 12-5" (JT, Lee, LP, etc...) I came across a book that mentioned the LHS-MHS game. And the book was published in the mid 1890's. I can't remember if it was at the Marshall or Longview public libraries. Might have even been at one of the high schools. I honestly can't remember. Been about ten years ago since I was compiling those things.

I have a BOX of stuff from when I was getting all that...

I was thinking the 2007 game was the 98th. Sometimes my math isn't the best! Years ago I was going through the Harrison County Courthouse Museum in Marshall and saw an old MHS football program from the early 1920s with Marshall called the Hillbillies. Perhaps someone from Marshall can enlighten us.

Thumpsup, what year did you see that program from the 20s?

I've done as far back as 1922 so far and they were calling Marshall, the Mavs then as well.

Edit: Another thing, the 2009 game won't be the 100th game. It'll just be the 100th year of the rivalry. They'll have played 99 in 2009.

Mavchamp, I appreciate your participation on this board and the Supersite you maintain. You should be getting a lot of board activity from Lobo fans since we're back in the same district. On several occasions you have referred to "reading a article," etc., alluding to the LHS-MHS series starting prior to 1909. That's amazing we beat out Odessa Permian vs Midland Lee. I TOTALLY overlooked that one when considering what should and shouldn't be on the list. As has been said before, it's a great honor to trump a rivalry of that magnitude.

And it's amazing to think about that, Mavchamp. Before 1906, there was no forward pass legalized (and even when there was, it was restricted terribly for a few years). And until like 1885, there were 15 players on the field. I think it was...

I'll put it this way......

I read an article that was published in the EARLY 1890's...... Longview had beaten Marshall for the first time..... and even in 1890, it was labled an "ancient rivalry"....whatever that means.

What it DOES tell me is that we can add at least another 15 years or so to this rivalry....and who knows how many more years it was there before then.

I frankly am surprised that Permian-Lee was No. 2. Thought they'd go No. 1. It will be quite an honor if (as I now expect) LHS-MHS is honored as No. 1 tomorrow. It is a great rivalry (since 1909!) and now it's again a district game. Can't wait for Oct. 17. By the way, the 2009 game at Lobo Stadium will be the 100th GAME of this great series.

My guess is that Midland Lee-Odessa Permian will be #1 or #2..... and Marshall-Longview will be the other.

I still love the game.....but 7 losses in a row have made it tougher to get as excited about it as I was in HS when it was a 50-50 crap-shoot as to who would win every year. 4 of the 7 losses have been blowouts. I've felt the fire a few times in some of those games (esp the 38-35 game in 2006, and in 2004 when we jumped out to a 15-0 lead) but the Lobos always took care...

I don't think Lee v. JT should be on the list at all. It is a relatively short-lived rivalry that is also pretty one-sided. I can think of dozens of other rivalries better than that one.

I think whichever place, 1 or 2, is a great testament to the rivalry. Great respect also from a magazine that has not shown the Lobos so much respect in the past. Whatever will be will be. My big question about the poll is how Lee/JT didn't make it unless that rivalry and longview/marshall make up the top 2. How great that would be. We shall see!!

Last year about this time Maxim Magazine put out a "Top 15 Best Rivalries in the Nation" . Longview vs. Marshall made #15. The only high school rivalry mentioned.

But...still have my doubts about anything DC puts out.

DCTF (texasfootball.com) has started a top ten rivalries series. The first article lists Dallas Carter vs Dallas Kimball as number ten and they will release the others in order over the next two weeks. Leaves for interesting debate about who will be #1, where (and if) LV vs Marshall will be ranked and so forth. Any thoughts?
