Two former Lobos are making news in the sports world this week ... Texas Ranger Chris Davis and former New England Patriot Willie Andrews.
How happy I am for Davis, who appears to be headed for a long, successful MLB career. The Ranger announcers said he'd given up smokeless tobacco in favor of Bazooka (sugarless) gum to be a good example for youngsters. Not only can he play baseball, he's got a strong value system in place. He will be successful in life.
As happy as I am for Davis, I'm just as sad for Andrews, who has had every opportunity for the same success but appears to be throwing that opportunity away. Andrews has been arrested for "allegedly pointing a gun at his girlfriend's head." In Feburary Andrews was arrested for pot and illegal gun possession. In 2002 he was arrested at Baylor on another gun charge. And then there's the infamous "rock-throwing" incident where he almost lost his football scholarship at Baylor.
I pray that Andrews will somehow overcome his demons. But after a while you just run out of chances. Sad. Very, very sad.
