Good LORD that's a lot of money. A hundred million going to the high school? Not bad. It could pay for the video board (I think the estimate I heard on that was about $600,000) and the new gym(s)/buildings we're going to build.

Bond election ... | ||

Actually, it's about $35 million for the high school. I believe the booster club is trying to raise donations for the video-display board but I'm not sure. I haven't seen any publicity from the booster club or the News-Journal about the video board. Maybe someone with the booster club can fill us in.
I know with the proposed bond election there was talk of adding some bleacher seating at Lobo Stadium as well as turning the present band hall and nearby areas into an expanded dressing area, etc. Maybe when (or if) the school board OK's the bond election Monday night, we can start getting some specifics about the stadium-dressing area work. There's no question LISD needs to upgrade/replace campuses. I have to say I'm surprised LISD may try to do this all in one bond election. It will be very expensive ... but needed in my opinion. |

Wow, you're right. It's the boosters doing the video board, paying for it with ads. We had a big discussion over this and I flat out dropped the ball.
But yea, I've heard they're PLANNING quite a bit. Possibly the girl's softball area being turned into a locker room for the visiting team and moving the softball field elsewhere (after all, it WAS only rushed together because of some idiot lawyer threatening to slap the school with lawsuits). |

the band hall and art area will be moved to a new building yet to be constructed. these old areas will be converted to new and enlarged locker room and dressing facilities. There will be an expansion of the CATE (career and tech) building and the before mentioned band hall theatre arts building which will more than likely take up some of the area where the exisitng tennis courts are now. New courts will be addressed. There will also be what I believe will be the 4th gym constructed at LHS. This will not replace the colliseum but will serve other sports like volleyball.
The extra seats and Lobo stadium renovations have been removed as there was some negative thoughts regarding this being part of the bond election. Evidently they thought it was a reason for some to vote against the bond. While I'm not happy they are leaving the stadium out of the bond election..... Too many feel like we've already dumped WAAAY to much money in that area in that we've got almost a million in the turf after all the mess that happened there. Again I'm not happy about this but I want new schools for the kids. This will easily be the best thing that has ever happened to the school district. Many of our facilities are pathetic at best and our kids deserve better. Rates are at historic lows and we have very little bond indebtedness for a school of our size. I know it sounds like a lot but actually the added tax will put our tax rate LESS than what it was just a couple of years ago. Yes our tax rate was actually hirer a couple of years ago than what it will be after this hopefully goes through. I would like to hear what any and all of you think about the prospects of this bond going through. |

Bond and Lobo Stadium ...

I too understand deleting some Lobo Stadium renovations from the proposed bond election. (Although we WILL be getting much improved and expanded locker rooms, etc., which are badly needed.)
While it would be nice to see major renovations at Lobo Stadium, we already have the nicest stadium in 13-4A. (Hey, I remember the old Lobo Stadium on Nelson Street.) Anybody want to trade with Pine Tree or Sulphur Springs? No, didn't think so. This proposed 2008 bond election needs, in my humble opinion, to concentrate on academic needs. At $267 million, it will be very difficult to pass even without including athletic facilities in it. |

Re: Bond and Lobo Stadium ...

It will take a shockingly small number of votes to make or break this election. Did anyone see the paper today. They spotlighted Bramlette elementary.... They have classes in the hallways.... due to not enough room.
Again,,,,, even if it fails it will not change the fact that these schools are in poor to terrible shape. It will only prolong the inevitable in that we'll be replacing them at a later date with a much larger dollar amount to do it. 4 to 5 years from now that number will jump from 267 million to 5 to 6 hundred million. That's what happened to Tyler... their needs are more in the 800 million range now. Same with their jail house. |

LISD HAS to address the problem of the older and crappy buildings. I graduated in 1985 and I think maybe 2 new schools have been built (Doris McQueen and the one on Mobberly that was replaced with a new facility). The schools we have do not reflect the quality of the education that LISD does offer. More than likely, this is just one more reason we are losing students to the out lying districts and my wife and I are constantly defending the district to our friends who have chosen to send there kids elsewhere.

Re: LISD bond election called ...
|
The $266.8-million bond election will be a hard sell but is needed. Of course, the LISD should have been having an occasional bond election in past years to upgrade facilities ... but fact is the district didn't. Now school officials now must try to pass this enormous bond election. (Yet another example of lack of leadership in past years.)
The new schools/renovations/additions are needed ... and will only GET MORE EXPENSIVE if we delay them. Everybody talks about the importance of education ... until it costs them money. This bond election is important to the future of LISD. Please, PLEASE make certain you vote on May 10. |

Re: LISD bond election called ...

it will be a shame if this election doesnt pass. I went to Judson almost 15 years ago and I remember the Gym was so old and nasty even then......this election should pass easily but I know there will be many who vote against it
