Have we closed Pine Tree or Spring Hill yet, we need to make the jump to 6A in 2010...

I would not blame our passing game on any one person or one position, but I beleive the coaching staff sees and knows we need to continue to improve in our
passing game.Yes, it has cost us some games, but sometimes you have to take a step or two back in order to move forward. Dropping to 4A might help us a bunch.
For one we might be the biggest team (size wise and numbers wise) in the class. This will allow us to protect better, I just hope our size doesn't cause us
to revert back to the days of running the ball, because sooner or later we are going to meet a 4A team that's bigger then we are and we might have
problems. Bottom line is this, we have had some decent qbs, I would like a little more committment from our receivers, our running backs are becoming more
swing pass orientated, I think the offense is reading defenses better and calling audibles, more importantly our players are fastly becoming more disciplined.
All are credits to Jonh King and the staff. We just have to continue to develop and become more DEDICATED to our passing game...This should be a good season,
4A has some really talented teams.

Seeing practice today, we are throwing a LOT more. We haven't completely done away with the I, but a majority of plays were run from the spread.
There were some mistakes (dropped passes, overthrows, etc.), as there always will be, but they're working hard to fix everything. We hardly run the triple option any more. Instead, we're doing the zone/read option which is where the QB reads the backside defensive end. If he pinches down, the QB keeps it and runs to where he was. If he stays put, he gives the ball to the runningback going the other way. They're really working on many new screen plays I've never seen before. And zone/stretch plays. Not sure if this will translate into the season, but that's what we're really working on. And regarding size, we are HUGE on both sides. Much bigger than we have been, but not big to the point of being fat. These guys are just built huge. The guy who injured Ingram is like some genetic freak, even as a sophomore. He's huge AND fast. He'll definitely be getting some offers.

just like almost every year we have good reason to be optimistic for another great season. Despite what some think of King he has done an oustanding job and I
think he is learning and growing as a coach every year. He has done an outstanding job with the talent he has had the last two years. I think he will have his
best teams since being the head coach for the nezxt 2-3 years......even better than 04-05.

Anyone who went to practice today saw an entire practice period devoted to the screens (both to the RB and the WR ala Lufkin). It's crazy. I guess Coach
King finally decided to get away from the I as his mainstay attack.
But I like this because it gives our defense great practice running such plays against speed.

Petey, how did the WR's look in practice.

They are explosive and quick. I still see dropped passes which kill me, but there are fewer overthrows and such. Looks like they're really getting their
timing on.
On the lines, we have decent size and incredible strength and speed. Especially the defensive line. |

those guys have got to start catching the ball.....it seems to me in drills they catch almost everything but then in the scrimmage type practice and games they
choke. It will be a waste of of a good QB if we cant find some guys to catch the ball the next 2 years.
I think its as you have been saying all along Petey....King has been working more and more spread type formations into the system....but really, he hasnt had the tools he has needed to really open it up the past few years.....this year we will have a potent offense and the main piece we have been lacking.......a QB with a pretty good arm. |

Aye. From the beginning, he was trained to be a spread QB. In the past, incoming freshman QBs were trained to be option QBs. Johnson looks like he was trained
to throw the ball rather than run it.
I'm sad to see it go, but maybe it's for the better. We aren't completely out of the I, but for the most part we are. |

I think Longview will always be able to line up and runt he Ball at any team. I think the run game is our bread and the passing game will be our butter, kind
of gives our running game some flavor...
